Seller asking me for additional Postage??

Hi All
Looking for some advice - purchased a photo album on ebay for £4 and £4 for postage, paid within 5 mins of auction ending, now I have a message from the seller asking me for additional postage costs, saying that £4 will not cover her costs, she is giving me 2 options either pay the extra £1.35 or to cancel the sale. I think this is wrong, I paid what was asked and feel that she should supply me the goods??

What do you people feel?? What do you thin I should do???

Thanks for your help

You cannot force a seller to sell but on the other hand it is a very poor seller that expects a buyer to pay more than the postage stated.

Personally I would tell her that you are not going to pay more and wait to see what she does- don't say that you will accept a cancellation as then if she tries to send through a mutual you can decline it.

If she does refund and refuse to sell then make sure future buyers are warned when you come to leave feedback and stars.

It must be one huge photo album if it weighs more than 1kg- as a kg sent 2nd class only costs £3.50. you could also , and only if you want, suggest she uses Collect plus as she can send a bagged item up to 2kg for £3.99 but tell her she must use the 'to your door' service. obviously a seller is not obliged to change their delivery service, but it might be worth a suggestion.

I would reply to her saying that you purchased the item in good faith, and that it is solely her mistake that the p&p charges were insufficient. And that therefore you believe that the correct course of action is for her to sell the product at the agreed price, and make sure she's more careful about the p&p in her future auctions.

PS: Don't mention feedback or poor star ratings in any correspondence. If you do, and later on you wish to leave negative or neutral feedback if she refuses to sell the item, then she might be able to claim feedback extortion and get your feedback removed.

PPS: Have you paid for the item? If you pay the agreed amount, then this makes a clear statement that you expect the item for that price. If you don't pay, then she may issue a NPB dispute, and can respond to any INR dispute you raise by stating that she has not been paid.

The daft thing is if she refunds you she will still be out of pocket. If you decline a mutual then she still pays her 40p FVFs, another 15p to relist and I believe (but am not sure) that paypal retain 20p of their fees for a refund in these circumstances. Coupled with a potential neutral and poor stars is making this a costly choice for the seller. Might as well pay the extra £1.50 herself and be done with it.
I wonder though what postal service she is using to arrive at a figure of £5.50?

  • Its the sellers responsibility to make sure that the correct postage rates are charged and visible to the potential purchaser.

I wouldn't pay extra as you went into an agreed sale and factored in postage rates with the cost of the item.

Probably the 'petrol to the PO, full-price jiffy-bag and a latte while I'm there' service.

I had this the other week as a seller - I quoted for 2nd class post but when I got to the PO I had to send it by standard parcels as the dimensions were too big

My mistake, so took it on the chin, and just msg'ed the buyer to apologise that due to the different postage it may take a bit longer to arrive

Got positive feedback in the end, a bit gutted I lost out, but it was squarely my fault
