I think that the end is nigh for the old beast - the battery died completely 5 years ago - meaning that it has to be plugged in to run....

If you think that Toshiba ever cost £499, you need your head tested. I'm not joking.
It's bog standard and it's normal price is £299.
People are buying second generation i3 machines close to that price point.
Problem with PC world is the hard sell, and usually over the top pricing.
As others have suggested, depending on its intended use you may be better off looking elsewhere.
