Cancelling Times iPad subscription

I just called The times online to cancel my iPad subscription as I'm about to take a year out travelling and I don't won't the cost, certainly not on a service I may not be able to acesss, they say I am locked into a years contract and cannot cancel. Is there anything to stop me just cancelling the direct debit to stop the service?

Stopping the DD does not stop the contract, it just means you haven't paid for it. They will chase you adding fees as they go.
