Student Insurance

Soon to move out of Halls to rented accommodation and suppose I had better get some insurance (should really have had some in Halls but never thought about it then). For someone sharing house with 4 others how much should I insure my contents for (usual student trappings including laptop)? Have looked at Endsleigh and http://www.sisdirect.co.uk/ . Can anyone give advice and recommend any others? Out of interest wouldn't my parents insurance cover my stuff whilst away from home? Any help gratefully received.

Hiya!
Sis direct have been good to me. I've paid about a third of what I would have paid Endsleigh. Last year I was with Saxon insurance, but thwir prices seem to be more like Endleigh's now.
The Sis Direct team are really friendly on the phone! I moved house about 3 months ago and they sorted it all out, free of charge. (Not sure if the other's do. Endsleigh don't for car insurance)
As for tips - Endleighs claim that, on average, students take £4500 of stuff to uni with them. I suppose if you were to add up the cost of every sock and pencil you owned it would be this much - at a push. If I remember correctly, Endleigh does NOT include Laptops in with this figure. They have to be insurance under a separate section. I insurance myself for the lowest amount for general possesions, then covered my laptop for it's market vaule (along with printer etc)
Endleigh make a big thing about being endorsed by the NUS. So what? Our NUS actively encourages bindge drinking, doesn't make it the sensible option though!
Endsleigh do point out that parents' home insurance (check yourself) might not cover walk-in type thefts (when you forget to lock the door!) Although inmy opinion, if you're daft enough to leave your door unlocked, what do you expect. However, SIS Direct also cover this..... they don't seem to see the fuss about it. It's just included!!!
General security tips - keep valuables out of sight. If anyone does ever break into your room, they're unlikely to spend time going through your socks' draw incase you hide a laptop their..... And I ALWAYS keep my own room locked when I'm out!
Hope this helps. SIS Direct are the way forward i think, at the moment!

Our home insurance does cover our daughter's stuff, so I suggest you check with your parents what their policy covers.0
