will drinking guinness help ???

Is it true or an old wives tale that a glass of guinness a day can help sort anaemia??
I'm currently taking iron pills from doc but still tired all the time and guinness was recomended by a friend.
Can any one advise??
Many thanks
Casey

I don't know if this is true or not regarding health benefits but when I had my kids in the late 1970s, the husbands brought Guinness or Mackinsons into the maternity ward for us new mums to drink! This was done with the approval of the midwives. It was supposed to be helpful with the breast feeding and milk supply. How times change.

    I don't really know.
But I do know that vitamin C helps absorb the iron that you take. So have a large glass of orange juice with your tablet and that might help.

Never drink tea with a meal as the tannins can stop the absorption of iron.

I always drink guiness when i'm feeling a bit anaemic. My mom told me that midwives used to come around with a small bottle of guiness for each new mother.

If you don't get on with the Guinness, try Spatone liquid iron supplements!

I assume your doctor has told you about the best foods to eat to increase iron, and the ones to avoid? The nhs site is quite good

Also be warned that taking iron can make you constipated. I'm prone to being more inclined the other way but when I took iron things seized up noticeably!!

I heard that years ago Guinness was indeed rich in iron, as it was brewed in iron casks and absorbed some of the iron. However now they don't use them anymore so it no longer is as iron-rich as it used to be.

The orange juice and tea advice is spot on.

Go on have a glass it'll do you the world of good - might even help you "go" in the morning.
I never liked the stuff until my third baby and felt run down, so tried a bit and loved it - I reckon my body must have needed it so liked it, you could try putting a little blackcurrent in it to sweeten it.
First time pregnant they dished out the iron tablets and I didn't know whether to try and swallow them or sit on them!!

when my husbands aunt was elderly and in hospital with a broken hip some 25 years ago the nurse came round during visiting and asked "Miss X,would you like a glass of Guinness?" to which she uttered the immortal reply " No, thank you very much, but my nephew would take a Gin and Tonic"
That still raises a laugh with us to this day!

Didn't really like Guinness, but did quite like Mackies and used to have a small can each week when I was pregnant in the mid eighties!
