Can anyone recommend a cheapish hotel in New York?

We are going to New York in September, haven't been for 20 years. Can anyone recommend a cheapish hotel? We don't mind the location as long as it is safe. Being near a subway would be useful. We don't need any services, just a comfy place to lay our heads!

I'd get looking sooner rather than later, as september is a very busy and expensive time of the year in new york, that's what i was told when i was looking at going, (we decided to cancel due to the cost), but last january i booked 7 night in the affinia shelburne (from their website) got it for £1000 it's now well over that.

You will have your work cut out finding somewhere cheapish in Manhattan but if you look a little further afield the prices start dropping nicely.

Last time I got a place in Long Island City that was pretty reasonable B&B. Two minutes away from a 7-train subway station that took us to Grand Central/42nd St in under ten minutes, which put us on a major transport hub for anywhere in NY. New, clean and basic but comfortable with a small but pleasant staff, plus free wifi which let the OH stay in touch with her folks nicely! Also a Seven/Eleven next door and a couple of characterful diners and local bars within spitting distance so we didn't have to rely on Manhattan prices for the odd snack/coffee/beer etc.

There were also several other similar priced new hotels along that stretch of Queens Boulevard and several more nearby in Astoria, although they were not so convenient for transport. Same applied for quite a few places the other Side of the Hudson in New Jersey A 20-odd dollar subway pass took care just about all our travel needs for a fortnight, so it did work out really cost effective. :)

Hotel Pennsylvania is about £130 a night but it right next to Macy's and near Times Square and it's not bad. Book through Octopustravel as I know they do it.

Again it depends how much travelling about you want to go or when you want to do. Try some of the holiday compare sites
