Tesco Cavity Wall Insulation - is this right???

Hello. We moved into our new house last November and it has cavity walls that aren't insulated. I have been looking around at the various suppliers who offer grants for this type of thing as we don't want another cold winter with the heating on full blast 24/7!! Anyway, I have had 3 assessments from different companies and they all advised that given our situation we would have to pay towards the insulation with prices ranging from £140 - £165. This is fine, however we have just had Tesco come out to do a check and they have said that we can have it done completely free of charge....the sceptic in me believes that this is too good to be true and we are going to be stung with a bill further down the line!

Before I sign anything to agree to work being done I was just wondering if anybody else in my situation has had cavity wall insulation done completely free??? My husband and I own the property with a mortgage, both work full time and claim no benefits (other than the standard £20 per week Child Benefit - our daughter is 22 months).

Thanks in advance!

I don't know the details but a friend of mine had most of the cost paid under a grant a couple of years ago.

Question Tesco in detail and carefully read up before you sign anything.

Also shop around as, if free deals are available, make sure you get the one that is right for you.

We are a company called Enact Energy (just been added by MSE as an approved forum company representative) and manage the Home Efficiency service for Tesco. As long as the assessor has confirmed it is free then yes it is free. The works are paid for by our energy company partners who have big carbon saving targets to meet by the end of this year. Different companies are paid different amounts by energy companies and also have different rules about the cost of their services which would be why some wanted to charge. The free loft and cavity wall insulation is for everybody so you do not need to be on benefit. There are some circumstances when our works are not free but this is confirmed through the free no obligation assessment.

Hope I have put your mind at rest? :-)

Usually when one is credited to be a rep by MSE they have it in there signature and I think your username is different colour ie purple for example so you haven't had this properly done yet or your claim is false reported for clarification

I made a call into the company last night, and yes it is in fact free!!!! We are getting our cavity walls insulated only as the loft was done by the previous owners. Well worth a phone call!! With Tesco the charges only kick in if you need more than 50 square meters done, which luckily we didn't!
  • Tesco pass on the details to a fitting company
YES ITS FREE to anyone IF the prop0erty is suitable. No issue if you work, oAP or on benefits.

It is supposed to be finishing in December.

NOT ONLY tesco are doing this.

I just had mine done and was so impressed decided to ask for a job. (Already a surveyor so no training needed).
    Starting next Friday....:T:T:T:T
  • Thia may be a silly question but how do you know if you have cavity wall insulation or not?

If you look at the walls you should be able to see that small holes ( about 10p size) have been drilled and filled in the mortar between bricks.Look around the windows as these are the most easily seen. My b/f had his done free last month and when they filled the holes it is such a good match that they are quite difficult to see. However we noticed that a house along the road clearly had 'dots' all over the wall where the match wasn't so good. Anyway,If you are thinking of having it done they will come and drill a small test hole to check.
    Hope that helps.
  • Thank you Bobbon- much appreciated - I had no idea - I am off to look for holes!
