Insurance for an 18 month old Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop

Hi there (originally posted on techie board) :o

I bought my laptop new for £600 in October 2005. It's a Pentium M 1.6Ghz with 512MB RAM and shared graphics (128MB) and I've got the chance now to take an endleigh insurance policy on it for £31. The equivalent replacement is a dual-core (the 6400) which is a step up but apparently this is what they would 'obtain for me'.

I've not had a chance to look through the Endsleigh (Student Possessions) documents as I'm only contemplating the cover. Does anyone know what happens in the event of a claim with Endsleigh, what are they like and generally as an insurer? If anyone's had issues especially with the all-risks cover on a laptop I'd be interested to hear those. I'd be interested in how they settle the claim, i.e. do they just obtain a laptop and deliver it or give you a credit to Dell and you choose one?

Cheers :)

It will vary from insurer to insurer, but most will have a contract with a national supplier to replace or repair the item.

Forget how much you paid for the item (it isnt relevent), they will go by the spec only, or as close to it as possible, i.e. to avoid betterment on your part. However, computer technology being what it is will always advance quicker, but do not expect such a big jump.

Sorry - I can't answer your questions but have a couple of my own as I'm generally quite cynical about insurance (she says, touching wood).

    Is it £31 a year?
How many times has the laptop broken down in the past year or two?
Do you back your work up?

I'd be inclined not to take out the insurance - I would have thought obsolescence would be more imminent than a breakdown and I doubt the insurance would cover that.

    JMHO!
