Chimney pot problem!!

This morning I was awoken at 6:30am by the sound of a big crash. We checked around the bedroom where the sound appeared to come from but couldn't see anything. When I went out to the car there was a large dent in the roof with bits of chimney pot all over the drive!! The chimney itself seems fine but the pot has broken in half, half of which is still on the roof. As it fell it broke a few roof tiles so I'm thinking this will be an expensive job? The problem I have is that we are going away this weekend so don't have much time ( or money) to deal with this right now!!
So my question is - me an OH are useless at DIY. How do I get the remaining pot down quickly, safely and cheaply?
Has anyone had this problem and if so how much did it cost to replace? Thinking maybe an insurance job because of the roof tiles too.
Any helpful ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Call a local roofer. They will have a roof crawler they can use to get up there and remove it if it's a straightforward simple job as it sounds. Shouldn't cost too much if they can do it that way. The roof tiles could be replaced fairly quickly and easily too if there's not many of them damaged and the roofer should be able to get some replacement tiles easily if it's a common type of roof tile.

For what it's worth, if it's just 1 pot and maybe a couple of dozen tiles to replace I wouldn't bother claiming on the insurance. I'm assuming the tile battens are still ok and it's just the tiles themselves that are damaged though. If the battens are damaged too then it's a bigger job. Any decent roofer will be able to tell you what needs doing within a few minutes of being up there.

    Hope that helps!

Probably a bit late now but the fire service would have removed the pot and debris free of charge as it would have been deemed that the pot is / was in an unsafe condition.

When you get back a roofer to do the tiles and I would suggest ring around a few chimney sweeps, quite a few do pot and stack repairs and they will undoubtedbly be cheaper than a general builder.

Not a DIY job unless you have a scaffold tower, crawler or similar.

Also not too serious. Most local builders/roofers will has a yard with a fair few reclaimed tiles used in the locality.

But I would disagree with the insurance view, I would claim unless you have a seriously poor insurance history. The chimney would only have fallen under storm conditions, (;);))

I think any damage to the car would be a separate issue under your car cover having had a similar exp, ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
