I would love step 1 to be the only one before it going public.

In the private sector you have a number of rounds of justifying that you need anyone at all first. Then writing the spec and having it signed off. Then HR generally stick their oar in and make things difficult and decide it the roll is a different grade to what you intended and so you have to go through half the loops again.

THEN it goes public and then you do the rest until the last point at which time your told there is a recruitement freeze and/ or you have to shed 5% of all heads (and you can lose unfilled vacancies as heads)

Sorry, they work ONLY for themselves!

They are typical of most people with "agent" in their job title, their allegiances are split and ultimately they are self serving. Yes the company pays them but at the same time they do coach candidates, improve their interivew skills etc and at times manipulate CVs etc all with the intent to increase the chances of their candidate being taken on rather than another agents. That is certainly not in the interest of the hiring company
No they work for the client as THEY pay them and without clients they would have no £££

They do not do coaching, improve interview skills or anything you list there. None of the ones I have ever been with have done that.

I used to do this every week when i worked in recruitment. I worked in the engineering sector myself but if i had an interview for a candidate it was in my best interests to prepare them for this - ultimately if they were not going to get the job then it meant we got no money, and if i didn't get any money in i wouldn't have been in a job for long! I think in certain sectors this would be common place

If you apply for an any government jobs you need atleast 2 days to complete the whole candidate questionaiire(8-10 questions).
They evaluate you for interview selection based on the answers you give. And in the interview, they ask questions around your answers, and they write down what you say in a formatted sheet of paper. All the effort you put goes in vain when you come to know that they are doing interviews for formality sake as the post is going to be filled internally.
They have to document all the steps to comply with this skewed process designed by a no-brainer. I blame the labour govt who bas*trdised the whole process just to keep people in the job. In other words, some people in govt go to their office becuase they have interviews to do !

A lot of companies only use one agency and you would always put at least 5-6 CV's over and they may interview all of them so if you were good at your job the candidate would get the job and you get paid. The candidate however can not get the job if the agency wont put the CV forward, for whatever reason.

Thanks for the condescending "if you were good at your job" post. I outlined that often interview guidance is part and parcel of the service offered, especially when you are dealing at the more skilled end of any sector.

To convince an employer to exclusively look at CVs from your company isn't the easiest thing in the world, whilst it happens it takes a long time of relationship building, and mutual trust. Even if this is the case to cement that relationship you want to ensure that every individual going in front of the employer is well prepared and will impress, continuing to build that trust.

For those of you who lambast recruitment agencies it is one of the easiest ways to start up a business. All you need is a phone and a computer. If it is that easy i ask why are you not doing it yourselves.....
