Barclaycard refuse to supply documents !!

Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit of a newbie, so please tell me if this has been posted in the wrong place ....
I am trying to find out if I paid PPI on a Barclay Mastercard which I had several years ago. (The account was closed in 2009). As advised by Barclaycard Customer Services, I wrote a letter requesting copies of statements and the agreement and enclosed a £1 cheque. (I never actually indicated that I was looking to possibly reclaim PPI)
Eventually received a reply from BC saying :
"As no sum is, or will or may become payable under your credit agreement, Section 78(3) (a) of the Act provides that we are not obliged to provide you with documents and information you seek. We confirm that the cheque enclosed with your request has not been banked and has been destroyed ".
Is it worth me taking this further with the FSO or do I have no hope at all. Any advice much appreciated. Thankyou:)

Give them a call and ask if they can find you, the account was only closed 3 years ago so the info should be there.0

That method is for open accounts. Not closed accounts. Is it worth me taking this further with the FSO
You cannot complain to the FOS without complaining to the firm first and getting their response. The FOS will not help you on this either as you have made the mistake and the bank are correct in their response.

Not sure what you mean "mistake I have made" ?. I thought that the banks were obliged to provide documentation upon request - is this not the case ?
Can they refuse as Barclays have done ?0 -

They are not obliged to issue them. The £1 method is a requirement for open accounts or where debts are outstanding. Once the account is closed or debt repaid then that £1 method is not available to you.Can they refuse as Barclays have done ?

What should I do then ? I was advised by Barclaycard that that was the procedure.0

You dont need any agreement to make a complaint. You just need to give your reasons for complaint. It appears you dont know if you had PPI or not. So, ring them up and ask them.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. The requirements of section 77-79 of the consumer credit act only apply to open accounts or debts outstanding. The requirements of that act cease when the account is closed or debt repaid.
As your accounts are open, then you can use that method. As RachE's accounts are closed, that method does not apply.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
