Boiler won't fire

Hi,
I have an Ariston Euro Combi A/23 MFFI and the light that indicates that the burner has failed to fire has just started to come on and stay on.
When I look in the manual it says "Shutdown due to the failure of the burner to light automatically"
We've had one of the valves replaced before as the boiler was not firing due to a sticky valve. I was told that until the part was sourced the best way around it was to heat up the valve with a hairdryer which would then un-stick the valve.
I've tried this approach but with no luck at all.
When I try to switch on the boiler I don't here the familiar clicking noises that tell me that the boiler is firing up. All I here is a whirring sound and no clicks (very quiet).
I've already placed a thread on https://www.diynot.com but thought I might get some luck on here.
Thanks
James

Have you got about 1.5 bar pressure on the dial? If not fill system and try again. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0

Thermocouple faulty or safety stat stuck in open position. The flames heat up thermocouple that generates a small current going through a safety stat to keep gas valve open. It it overheats or similar, the safety stat will open contact, thus stopping small current going to valve that will close and shut gas supply........you follow???...You see it as a boiler that does not fire....Gorgi boy job I guess.0

also a pump failure will cause the boiler to not fire up.
