Putting up curtains in bay window

Hello,

I have just moved into an unfurnished rented accomadation which has large bay windows. The curtains will be 120in drop.

My question is can I save myself a little money and buy the flexible curtain tracks? Will the tracks hold the weight of the curtains. Or should I be looking at the poles. The poles can cost around £80 which the tracks are about half of that. The curtains will be costing me a fortune already.

Ideally I would like to purchase thermal backed curtains.

Thanks for your help

  • I wouldn't. Those things have difficulty holding up a straight bit of curtain four foot across.

We have a flexible track from B&Q holding up large 180cm heavy curtains in our bay and it has no trouble with it.

We’re about to move into a house with bay windows and I’ve been thinking about what type of pole/track to get.

I want to be able to close my curtains (rather than just dressing the window) and I think a track will therefore be easier than a pole.

I think you just need to make sure that you get a decent track rather than something cheap and flimsy.

Wilkos do a decent metal track that is bendable. We have it in our bay window. Have a look online at their site. I had to order ours because they did not stock it at our local small store but I had it delivered there so I could pick it up free saving myself the postage.

Bendable track is fine. I've always used it, mainly because I am a tightwad :)

What I would do first though is fix 2"x1" baton to the wall first to screw the track too.

When you come to fit the track to the baton, have a hairdryer or heat gun to hand, if you heat the track gently it'll curve a lot easier ;)

Also buy curtains that go to the window sill, not the floor length if you can.
Otherwise you get a gap at each end where the curtain flicks out at the sill.
(We just pop an ornament at each end though)

Thanks for replying, will go for the bendy ones, and put some extra brackets up for support.

We've got bendy track in our bay, with some heavy lined curtains on so you should be ok with them. The only issues we had were the tracks not being long enough requiring some jiggery pokery with joining pieces, and the state of our walls - they'll all that 1930's black ash plaster stuff which crumbles like a !!!!!! whenever you try and drill into them. After much mucking about and numerous holes in the walls I ended up bonding some wood batons to the wall with no more nails and fixing the curtain track to that instead. Touch wood and thus far they've been up for almost a year now without crashing south....

Also, top tip (which I'm sure everyone knows) spray the tracks with some polish before you put the runners on, they'll run lovely and smooth then.

Swish or similar flexible track is fine provided you use sufficient support brackets securely screwed into something solid.

Screwing into the PVC window for example will hold less weight than if you can screw into a solid wall. Also beware you don't excessively damage the PVC.

Also beware window lintels which can be so hard they are very difficult to drill into.

Can you post some pictures, ideally showing a close up of the top of the window bay where the track or rail will be fixed?

As it's a rented property, make sure you get permission in writing from the LL before you do anything to it.

However daft it may sound, putting up a curtain rail will cause damage / change to the property and you don't want your LL to come after your deposit at the end in order to make it good ...
  • Go to hotukdeals site and look for the Argos bay window curtain pole. There's one there reduced from £69.99 to £29.99 if that helps.
