i recently installed windows 98 first edition on my old computer. I formatted the drive and then set it up...
the only problem is that now my computer can only display in 8 colours... or something similar, which makes the colours look awful.. this never happened on it before when the same windows was installed....
what should i do?

would seem like you don't have the correct display driver for your graphic card.
to find out what it is if you don't know ope the 'display' settings from control panel and look at the 'settings' tab,
once you know what graphics card you have you should be able to download them from the internet, try http://www.driverguide.com/Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0 -
???dont know if this is the right place for this as i havnt posted before but i have w98 1st ed and want to get broadband with it. Currently use BTYahoo internet anytime but bt needs w98 2nd ed for their broadband. Is there a broadband that I can use with w98 1st ed? or would it be cheaper to try and buy the 2nd ed and install?
Im old and only semi-literate on these things, so please keep it simple, thankyou.Life in the old dog yet?:hello:

windows 98 se (2nd edition) had a lot of improvements, especially for networking and internet connection.
which is probably why your broadband supplier is reccommending it.
i have sent you a pmsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

You could make the leap to XP although if your pc is very old you may not have the processing power/memory/disk space to cope with it
Looks like you can get OEM Windows XP here quite cheap. (they also do Win98se)

However note the bit about "Must be purchased with another computer hardware component".
The first reviewer is suggesting you buy an 89p mouse. Not sure if this counts. If you read the similar blurb for Windows 98se on the ebuyer site it says, to be sold with any "non-peripheral hardware component". Perhaps a very cheap cooler fan or something counts (which you probably throw away). Not sure.0 -
OEM software is a grey area but as long as you buy a piece of hardware you can get away with it. The onus is actually on the reseller as they are not supposed to sell it without hardware. As i said its a grey areastay lucky!
