Setting up a not-for-profit

Options
I am sorry to be a dodo but I have a lot of questions:

1. Can you refer me to a good website that gives clear guidance on not-for-profit regulations?

2. Can you run a NFP bar/food venue?

3. Can you get grants for NFP businesses that sell alcohol and food?

I hope to set one up in Cardiff, that is a food venue at lunch and a live music venue by night, with lots of free workshops for locals and profits going into local causes.

Probably not, because this is not something which has a set definition.

If you don't make some profit, you won't last long, for starters. It's what you do with the profit which might affect the way you set up.
    2. Can you run a NFP bar/food venue?
Despite what I said above, you can run anything on a NFP basis - I saw a B&B advertising that they were NFP, but the rider was that all profit went to charity. The point is, you can't make a loss, or you'll go under.
    3. Can you get grants for NFP businesses that sell alcohol and food?
There are fewer and fewer grants out there, but that's not to say you can't. If you're planning to use volunteers, then google volunteer and Cardiff and see if your local volunteer organisation can help you access information. What about the Welsh Development Agency?

You could do worse than get in touch with Hamilton House / Co-Exist in Bristol who are doing something which sounds quite similar to your plans. However you'll see they have set up a Community Interest Company (CIC) which might be the way for you to go.

But do think through your plans: there are some things you won't be able to get for free (insurance, waste disposal, food hygiene training, utilities), and you might struggle to offer lots of free workshops and still make profits.
