Missold Car Insurance?

Hi, I've recently been going through my finances with a fine toothed comb (haven't we all) and I noticed that I was paying £78/month to the AA. I wasn't entirely sure what all that money every month could possibly be for, so I called them to find out. There's £13/month for Breakdown and, wait for it, £65/month for Car Insurance.
I nearly fell off my sofa , I couldn't believe how much I was paying for car insurance given that I have nearly 10 years no claims bonus, live in a safe area of Reading, park my car on the drive, have normal mileage and a 1.4ltr engine. In previous years I recall paying between £20-£30 a month, so have no idea why the hike in premium  !!
2011 was a bad year for me, and a lot happened, but this is a severe oversight on my part. Fortunately my car insurance is due for renewal in September, and initial quotes are at about £24/month.
BUT CAN I CLAIM MONEY BACK FROM THE AA?! Surely something has gone wrong somewhere? It just can't be right!! It just can't be my premium is nearly £800/year
Any advice or thoughts much appreciated!!
Thanks in advance

You wont get a refund of what you've already paid, because its your responsibility to check and see what your insurance is costing., go on line and see if you can get a cheaper quote from somewhere else.
As you said, it was a severe oversight on your part.0 -
This a clear case of mis-purchasing (consumer incompetence), not mis-selling (fault of the firm selling it)
If your car insurance is too expensive then cancel it. Its your respoonsibility to cancel renewals.0 -
BUT CAN I CLAIM MONEY BACK FROM THE AA?!
No. There has been no wrong doing. Each year they tell you their price and you either agree to it or you tell them to cancel it as you have gone elsewhere.
You didnt shop around and you didnt tell them to cancel and you accepted their price.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). So did you not read the renewal notice?
If you didn't recieve a renewal notice, you are very fortunate that AA renewed it for you automatically, otherwise you would have been driving without insurance.
Your car could have been seized and a large release fee required to get it back, you could have had 6 points plus a fine to deal with, and getting insurance in future would be much more expensive with 6 points on your licence.
A few hundred pounds extra on your this year's insurance is a lot less that the combined cost of all of that over the next 5 years.
