Adding a second driver- NCB questions

Hi all,

My brother recently passed his driving test and insurance is well over £8000 for him.

If I add him as an additional driver with myself as the main driver what happens to my NCB if he has an accident. I won't be fronting! I'll let him drive occasionally only until his premiums as a sole driver go down then he can get his own car and insurance. But I don't want to risk my NCB as my insurance is fairly high anyway.

Any ideas? I called my current insurer and they said the accidents team would decide, its slightly complicated and depends on the circumstances of the accident. Which doesn't help me decide if I want to take the risk.

Thanks

If he has an accident or claim where the Insurer cannot recover their outlay from another person or Insurer, then your no claims bonus will be reduced.

If your brother is young and recently passed, there's a fairly high risk of him having a fault accident, especially if he drives at night time

If your NCB does drop through no fault of your own, make him pay difference come renewal time for next 2years.

If he is young and/or inexperienced then a higher excess may apply and protected no claims probably wont be when he is driving.

Very risky. The figures suggest he will have an accident in the 1st year.

  • compulsory excess, and inexperienced driver excess will be added to the policy, first one is usually £250 and the other is approx £300+ then add you voluntary, and this is what is paid out by you if he has an accident and its his fault, so could you afford the risk, plus higher premiums for the next 5 years.

if your insurers have a named driver discount scheme like DL etc, these are not worth it as the discount cant be taken away from your insurer to another insurer, and may be a waist of you money for this sole purpose of accumelating Named driver discount.

lets see if we can help here!

what car has he been running quotes on.
    what engine sizes.
    what security does it have.
what kind of job is he in if any.
are you hunting third party only quotes or all three levels of cover.
have he put anyone down on his quote as named driver how old are they are they experienced (over 30 driving 10+ years) are they employed?
