In the meanwhile I'm installing an OS onto a spare 80 GB hard disk I had, to ride me though, and then I'll transfer that onto the new SSD when it comes..

Watch out for AHCI/IDE problems, probably easier to clean install to the new SSD.

I've ordered a Crucual M4 from Amazon and it should be here in a few days (their free postage).

Good choice. Hopefully it will come with 0309 firmware rather than the newer 000f which has issues. If you get one with 000f there's always the option to re-flash it to 0309. Tbh the M4 firmware releases from Crucial have been a bit of a rollercoaster ride but worth reading through the forums before deciding to uplift. As always, if it ain't broke.......

  • HiYa Prowla see #8, my commiserations .. .. I weighed up with my usual price per GiG in the risky early adopter days of SSD's and came to the conclusion then with the C300 .. .. and now with the M4 that I'd rather pay £1 a GIG for Crucial ~ than ~ £60p a GiG for other cheap end brands. And yes never without native AHCi and only ever with a clean install.

I never had any problems and ignored the brands advice and flashed to 000f and still no probs. Often times however its lousey MOBO's / BIOS's and SATA AHCI drivers that can cause SSD's a problem.

Crucial do have the advantage of actually making the chips used in the SSD, so are able to control quality much better.
Mind you, having said that, the only PC Ram I have ever had that has failed was from Crucial. Didn't stop me buying from since though. Their C/S is amazing. Faulty ram sent to them on 20th Dec., new ram arrived on 23rd Dec.

My M4 is now installed - I used Macrium Reflect (free) to clone my temporary HDD to it, and the PC seems happy.

Fingers crossed it lasts the course...
  • Both mine are MSAHCI [native to Win7] and give good results in AS SSD, mind you I went a clean install on both, I'm glad you're up 'n runnin prowla !

It is essential to make sure your Crucial m4 firmware is updated to version 0000f. Otherwise it might begin crashing after 5186 hours of use.
