Tent refund

Bought a tent from a company on amazon in May. Didn't have the space, weather or time to test it until the end of July. Found the tent to have parts missing and the bits that were there came apart when assembling the tent. Reported the faults to the seller who is saying we have left it too long to get a full refund, or that he needs the tent back in original packaging (we don't have this as threw the box away when it arrived). In my mind, the tent was unfit for purpose and it is within 6 months, so it is the seller that needs to prove that it wasn't faulty. We have had to buy another tent as we go away this week, so don't want a replacement or repair. What's the best we can hope for?

Don't believe that's true, as the claim is for the return of a faulty product.
