We also liked the idea of having a party type thing when we are back, for everyone (plus i'd get a second wear of the dress ;) ). But logistics play again (part of the reason we want to go away), as family and friends are spread all over the country. Ive also heard that this can end up expensive too :(

Yeah, I know a few people that got married abroad to save money, but then ended up throwing a second reception when they got back and spending more than they would have done in the first place.

Normally this is because elderly relatives are unable / unwilling to travel to the "first" wedding :)

If the main reason for getting married abroad is cost, take another look at how you were organising your UK wedding. Things like speeches, toasts and first dances aren’t compulsory, nor is a big expensive sit down meal.

Does your church have a church hall you could hire? Where were you thinking of having the after wedding party, could that work for a very similar reception, possibly combined with a later afternoon wedding?

What are the bits that are most important to you? For us, it was celebrating our wedding with all of our friends, so no separate day and evening guests, everyone is invited to spend as much of the day with us as they can (or want to). This means the catering has to be flexible (welcome drinks and canap!s as people arrive after the registry office, evening buffet). We won’t have a first dance, there will be one speech (mine, thanking people for sharing our day) and one toast (absent friends) everything will be informal and hopefully fun. Most of all the day will reflect who we are.
