Any right to exchange new item after 7 months?

Hi Folks,

I've had a look round and couldn't spot a similar question on here, so hope you'll be able to advise me again please.

This is for my good old brother-in-law, clutching at straws.

This time, he bought a folding door (for a room) back in February for a big house refurbishment job he's working on, and having finally got to the point where he was ready to fit it today, the customer has changed their mind and wants a different one.

The original one is still new and wrapped, but the supplier says they would only exchange it within seven days after purchase. I think this sounds reasonable as it's not faulty, just unsuitable, but does he have any right at all to a replacement after all this time please? He has the receipt.

Thanks for any help (and apologies if the answer is already on here somewhere).

  • None unfortunately. If he has had it 7 months it's hardly new!

He'd be having to rely on the goodwill of the company, especially if he is looking to upgrade.

Is he serious ? Someone changing their mind after 7 months ?
If it was bought in a shop there is no consumer protection for changing your mind, only the policies some stores have. If bought online, the DSRs would cover it for 7 working days.
Sounds like a business-to-business transaction anyway, so no consumer laws to give you any protection regardless.

If your BiL's customer wanted that door originally and now wants another one, he should simply charge the customer for both (and leave behind the one that's not used, or offer to buy it off the customer at a big discount).

I thought that he was being somewhat optimistic.

I'll pass this on to him.
