Hello,
I want to buy a product from abroad but as I have never purchased from abroad before I need advice on how I can protect the payment and what is the best method.
If I buy the product on a credit card and it doesn't arrive or arrives damaged will I be able to claim my money back?
If I buy the product and use paypal, again will I be able to claim it back?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If it's for over £100 and you pay on a credit card directly (not with Paypal) you'll be protected by Section 75 which is probably the best way to go.
If it's under £100 paying by credit card you can still start a chargeback with your card issuer and also take them to the Ombudsman should you disagree. Although Paypal does seem to weigh more on the consumer side as far as I know you cannot take them to the Ombudsman.0 -
Thankyou for your reply.
The goods total amount will be over £100 but individually they aren't. Does Section 75 still cover this?

It could be a matter of interpretation but I'd say that since the items are individually priced at below £100 then it's not covered by section 75 which covers items costing between £100 and £30,000 or £62,260 where both the goods and credit are from the same company (2011 amendment).
Personally, I would err on the side of Paypal. But as previously mentioned by another poster, Paypal is regarded as a third-party payment processor and not covered by section 75.0 -
Thanks.
What I'm trying to do is purchase a few items from abroad however the problem lies with the fact I don't know if the Company is legitimate and there is no way of finding out (I don't think). As a result of this, I'm trying to find a 'safe' method to purchase then it wont matter if I don't receive the goods as I can just claim the money back.
Does paypal safeguard the payment? For example, if I purchased 6 items at £20 each and they don't arrive can I claim it back or is there a time limit to raise this? The products will take about 10 days to make and then 20-25 days to deliver.
Also in terms of dealing abroad, I have been told never to pay direct into an individual bank account and always pay into a Company account which makes sense. However, why would I be given an intermediary bank account aswell as a beneficiary? If they are both Company names is it likely that the Company exists?
Thanks for all the help.0 -
Maybe you should tell us what you are trying to buy and the name of the company.0
