Student working 16 hours a week

Hiya, I have just finished my degree, and I am going to college in September, but have to drop my hours down to 16 from 24 hours a week to cater for this course. I' 22 years old and not living with parents

This course enables me to gain the skills that I will need to successfully apply for a primary PGCE.

Will I be able to get any benefits? Just to top my income up, as I will be 32 hours down a month. I have no children. My income will be around £4500 a year.

Are you looking for work and can start immediately? No.
Are you caring for a young child? No.
Are you working 16 hours or more? Yes.
Are you single 25 and over working 30 hours or more? No.

You cannot claim anything else. You could try student loans, grants...etc...

You will need to reduce your expenditure dramatically to live on £86.55 a week but it is possible.

As a full time student you can claim an exemption from council tax if you are fully responsible for the bill.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

You may be able to claim some LHA (shared room rate) and CTB on the grounds of a low income.
  • Think my car will have to go, and move back home, as I can't afford rent as its more than I will earn in a month plus £100 month car insurance.

Can't get student loans for a college course, as the kids on my course are generally 16 and just left school, so don't have all the worries of debts like me. I also have to pay £700 for the course cos I'm over 19. Be quite sad really as live over the road from the college, so no transport fees
