I would snap his hand off...Buy the car back & get if fixed for a couple of hunded quid.If you are going to sell the car in a few years, the fact its a cat c will make no difference to the price, because its such a old car.in fact if you buy it back then sell it, without having the repairs done ,you could make few quid.

Foxyuk, in response to your earlier post, the engineer has already told me I can retain it as salvage at 9%, so that is still an option thankfully.

Also, no I didn't claim direct via the third party's insurance, I claimed via my own. But kept NCD etc as it was non-fault. Why did you ask? Just wondering if that was a bad idea?

Advantages of using the third party Insurer

They normally allow you to retain the salvage (They will deduct the salvage value)

    You pay no excess

If you need to you can still cancel your policy after the claim. Some Insurers will automatically cancel your policy after you make a claim for a write off (Churchill are not one of them)

Disadvantages of using the third party Insurer

They are not obliged to follow the Ombudsmans rules on settling written off cars.

You cannot complain to the Ombudsman

They may be a ropey Insurer who handle claims badly.

...........Would it maybe be worth me paying for a valuation with Parker's and CAP(no idea if drivers can have access to the latter?). Then I could find out the average myself, before agreeing/disagreeing with engineer.

Also, what do I actually do in the event I disagree with the engineers valuation? Obviously I'd present my findings from Glass's etc and ask if he's prepared to reconsider. But if he still says no, is that final or can I go to the FOS for them to look into it?

Thanks again to everyone who's taken the time to help

I'd not be paying anything more at the moment.

Talk to your insurer, mention the FOS guide about retail value and the £1500 Glasses retail valuation you have already got and ask them to up their valuation
  • Is anyone aware of any insurance companies that insure CAT C' write-offs, and more importantly, that dont require a new MOT?

I spoke to VOSA earlier who confirmed that my current MOT and tax are both still legally valid as normal, until their expiry date, however some insurance companies may require a new MOT before they are willing to insure me.

My insurance is due for renewal (great timing!) so I'm wondering if anyone knows of insurance companies willing to both insure CAT C's and accept current MOT? Best quote I had was from LV, but they want a new MOT done :(

There are only a couple of companies that refuse to insure CAT C and they state that in their t&c.

The rule with the rest is that if they don't ask then they don't care.

So, read the T&C and "general assumptions" and if they don't mention it then you'll be fine. Answer all the questions honestly & full but don't volunteer anything not specifically asked about.

The people who decide what is important and so frame the questions are well trained & well qualified. The call centre people you talk to are (generally) neither so by volunteering things you often end up with unnecessary grief and/or expense

What's up with your current Insurer?

Churchill's Engineer told me they would require a fresh MOT. So now I have discovered that my current MOT is still legally valid, I'm trying to find insurance companies that don't require a new MOT.

I don't understand what a new MOT would prove to them? The checks done on an MOT would not even look at the damage done to my car, so would pointlessly be re-MOT-ing a car that already has legally valid MOT.

How can insurance companies get away with that when the law doesn't require a new MOT?

Have you tried asking Churchill to give you a few weeks grace to get the work and MOT done

That may well be an idea, thank you! But it's more about me avoiding getting a new MOT at all, to be honest, as I still have 6 months left on mine.

It's just sooooo frustrating having spoken to VOSA who confirmed a new MOT is not a legal requirement as the current one is still legal until expiry date. But it's a matter of finding an insurance company that doesn't require a new MOT under their policy.
