Cruise from Southampton

I am thinking of going on a cruise from Southampton in early November, problem is I live in Scotland.

The cruise does not include flights or train or coach travel.

If flying it would be from Edinburgh.
Train or coach from Perth.

What would you recommend for a couple of OAPs to get to Southampton?

We flew from Scotland the day before the cruise, took the train from the airport then a taxi from the station to the hotel.

Catch a flight from Edinburgh or Aberdeen to Southampton with Flybe. Numerous flights daily and much easier than the train, sometimes even cheaper. You can then get a train from the airport (Southampton Parkway) to the centre where the cruise terminal is only 5-10 minutes away depending whether you're with Cunard or one of the other companies.

If you haven't booked yet, think again. It is probably the worst time of the year to sail from Southampton. The weather will be against you unless you are experienced sailors, it will be no fun or enjoyment. Better to fly to a Med port and avoid the rough seas.

These ones are always advertising S'hampton departures with rail included from Scotland. I have never used them. I think they are probably the least hassle way to do it for those who would rather haev it all arranged for them but certainly not the cheapest.

Given the cost of luggage on planes and the enormous amounts cruise passengers seem to take, I'd look at the train
Plenty of time to get a good deal - there's a guide somewhere here

These guys run coaches from various places inc Glasgow. We've used them from Warwick and they were excellent. Bags were loaded in Warwick and next time we saw them they were in our cabin!

Not sure what it would be like for the longer journey - fare is £129pp return

I'd say fly, flybe do direct flights, however https://www.megabus.co.uk do direct coaches from Perth to London Victoria, then National Express do London Victoria to Southampton cruise ship terminal. I guess it's wether you prefer flying or driving. Flying is probably quicker though.

Fly if you can get by with a limited amount of luggage and book a hotel in Southampton the night before. Otherwise use Eavesway.

Cruisesavertravel had a nightmare this year when a train load of passengers missed a ship as the train failed. The ship won't wait!

We just came back from cruising from Southampton on Saturday and got train. The price dif (glasgow) between flights and train was ridiculous - approx £450 for flights compared to £98 return for train. Way down did Glasgow - Euston (underground to Waterloo) - SOuthampton. On way back didn't want to come through London due to Olympics so came via Birmingham International (just one change). Just myself and young son, huge baggage, and was absolutely fine - seats were booked and no issues. The train station was £7 in taxi from the port, and we arrived there 2 hours before our allocated time, but were still allowed straight through onto boat. I couldn't believe how easy it was.

After further research we have decided to give Southampton a miss.

We are going to get a fly from Edinburgh cruise.

A Thomson cruise in early November including tips seems a good price considering we were on previous cruise line and the mandatary tips were more than we spent on booze.

We don't really care where we go as long as it is all inclusive and tips included.
