Tax credits - missed the deadline

A friend of mine has missed the deadline to renew. She was very silly to have not done it ages ago and just couldn't get through tonight.

Can anyone tell me what happens now. The adverts say that she will have to pay back what she has had. Does that mean from April until now or does that mean everything from April of last year until now.
Thanks

The adverts say you may have to pay back any money you have had. I suggest that she rings first thing tomorrow and keeps trying until she gets through.

    Hi

It won't be a problem of she calls in in the next couple of days. Before the claim permanently ends it goes to a "SOA" stage (statement of account) which gives her a warning and an extension. She needs to do the renewal ASAP though and I hope she does is earlier in future to save herself the stress!

Normally the system doesn't start terminating claims for a few more days. Once that happens she will get a statement of account, and from that point she has 30 days (sometimes extended to 60) to contact HMRC and renew, her payments will be reinstated back to April.

So there is nothing really to worry about as long as she does it in the 30 days. But as someone else suggests, if she rings today she might avoid having to go through all of that.
