can a bank put a stop on your account...

for no reason...? i have been left this weekend without the possibility of withdrawing money as my bank abbey say there is a security flaw and to protect me (!!!) they cannot give me money!!!! they say the only way i can sort this out is i need to go into a branch and show ID. I find this incredible seeing as this is saturday late afternoon/evening and all banks are now closed till monday. so this has !!!!!!ed up our plans for the weekend and with no possibility of buying food either but they say they cannot help at the call centre.
is this normal procedure?!!! i find this incredible considering i have a toddler to feed too!!!

how can they do this to people? i am not surprised people suffer so much stress in life! this is these stupid companies!!!!!

Same sort of thing happened to me when I was using my Co-op account. I had made a debit card transaction over the phone but messed it up the first time but it went through second time. Next day, I tried to use my card at POS and ATM and it was blocked. I called the bank and they said they had blocked the account incase of fradulent activity! However, I was able to sort it out on the phone by speaking to their fraud department who verified the card use and unblocked it straight away ..

after i reported my switch card as being stolen (along with my credit cards) the bank put a stop on the account and ordered me a new card, even when i got the new card they asked me to pop into the branch to take the stop off

The Co-op bank did that to me too. I found it highly inconvenient.

I think sometimes they are abit quick off the mark for minimal transactions.

I tried to pay for 2 - 3 small items on the debit card in a short space of time but, then it got blocked.

It was awfull with a queue behind me - luckily I had my Halifax card with me otherwise it could've been even more ebaressing.

Yeah, I was only debiting £10 from my card and I'd only input the details wrong 1 time ... Went through ok the second time and then wham - card blocked. Was a bit red-faced the next day when I tried to pay for my petrol ... I'm sure the guy at the checkout thought I was telling fibs when I said I couldn't understand why it wasn't going through ..

I complained then closed the account as with all due respect to the Co-op the fact that this happened to me twice in as many months - using the card was quickly becoming a lottery.

Never happened on the Halifax card but, I just got a NatWest card so I'll see what happens with them (it's pastime of mine - collecting current accounts with debit cards).

  • Thats terribly overreactive of Abbey. Yes i agree its good to have some good security measures in place but it should be a simple procedure for you to go through with their call centre to allow you to continue to use your account, especially with family needs.

basically my main money was in the abbey account and normally i have nothing in the other account until later this week. We have been left stranded all weekend with no money for petrol or money to get food. i could have bene in the middle of no where and my bank would have left me stranded with a two and a half year. i am really not amused. i really think they go over board on this. also we have made no mistakes on putting a pin number.
i wonder if any of you remember the website where you can complain about banks. it is a banking site where you put in complaints about them..
what i find really strange is that i was in the bank on friday and they said nothing to me then. The same day i got £300 at the cashpoint and the next morning i try and go to buy a few bits from sainsburys and the card gets declined. i find it hard to believe that there was fraud between these 3 points!!!!!! and i am in the loser in all of this!
  • What did you do with the £300 you withdrew on friday then?
Did none of that get earmarked for shopping and petrol or is it just let's kick the banks again day?

No disrespect but, that's quite rude of you too be asking ;)

They used the debit card for shopping not, the withdrawn cash.
