Cancel contents taken online?

Hi, I'm moving on Monday and phoned Halifax to cancel my current buildings and contents and enquired about contents only cover for my new home.

After spending 25mins on phone and head reeling I said ok to their quote of £124, which girl told me was great price and took into account the fact I'm a long term customer with a good no claims discount.

Anyway, just went on comparison site and it seems I can get just as good or even better cover for around £70-£75 elsewhere and wonder what the process is to cancel the policy I agreed to so I can go elsewhere. I know the girl probably would have explained this in the phone call but to be honest I was brain dead after 25mins & just wanted to get off the phone so didn't absorb half of what she was waffling on about.

Thanks if you can advise.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

It will be detailed in your policy. Just make sure that any cancellation charges don't wipe out the saving you'll make.

£50 cancellation fee and £50 for cover used so far may make cancelling rather costly.

Ask how much 1st. Dont say you want to cancel. Just get the prices.

If you take ins out on the phone, I thought you had 7 days or something after you get the document to cancel.

You get 14 days from the start of the policy or from the date you receive the documents - whichever is later - as your cooling off period but that just means you have a legal right to cancel not that they cannot charge you a fee for it. After the cooling off period there is no automatic right to cancel though most insurers allow you to cancel the core policy but not the add ons like Legal Expenses after the cooling off.
