Buildings and Contents while major structural work is going on

I am about to start work on an extension in my home and my buildings and contents cover is due for renewal. I am lucky to be able to afford to consider renting another property while work is going on, and notified my insurer of my plans.

My broker told me that if I remain I can retain the same terms as if no works were going on.

However if I move out once work has begun I will not be insured. Even my statement that I will be there to check that all utilities are turned off at the end of the day was not relevant. If I do not stay there every night then insurance is void. The broker suggested Zurich until his manager reminded him this cover was no longer offered.

I know many people who plan a holiday when their water and heating is turned off during building works. Do their insurers treat them differently?

Most people probably forget to tell their insurers/ dont even think it is necessary to and because nothing happens they never find out their mistake.

Would never recommend them particularly but Towergate do unoccupied home insurance which is suitable during renovations etc. You can buy direct or via brokers.

we have just had major building work done and our renewal was due like yours, one of the questions we were asked by our brokers was about building work and was any due - i was honest and some minor alterations were made to our policy. when the work was completed a quick phone call and all sorted back to normal.

fair enough if nothing happens, but of something does you may find you have either no insurance or very reduced cover
