Make up for oily skin

I realise this may be a sort of 'how long is a piece of string' thread but I'm looking for some make-up recommendations.

My skin is very oily, and I usually have at least a few spots. At the moment I have an absolute killer that nothing short of a bin bag would cover up!

I used to wear concealer, foundation and powder every day but it just looked awful. Fine for the first hour or so but just a greasy mess after that. Now I usually just use concealer for the blemishes and under-eye circles. But that's not a great look either.

I've tried primer, and so many different foundations and tinted moisterisers (I can't spell that lol!)

Please someone tell me there's a miracle product out there that will give me light, even coverage and won't turn to grease before the day's over. I mostly work in an office and am out of the house for about 10 hours, if that helps.

TIA :)

Loreal magique (sp) bb cream, only problem might be the shades if your very pale, the light one is more like medium on my tanned skin but the effect is superb with good coverage and matte staying power but still not cakey.

If you are very pale take a look at the BB cream thread and see the reviews one or two pages back from the end on the Skin 79 Orange cream.

If you want full foundation to last (I recommend Revlon Colourstay for Oily skin) or any facial product I guess, try a light layer of Milk of Magnesia as a primer (search for it on here) sounds odd but it really works.

Although this product doesn't work for everyone just in case it does help you as its been a miracle for me, Freederm gel applied directly to any spot helps get rid of the redness and swelling and a light layer every few days at night helps keep the things at bay - good luck:)

Mineral foundation is a good way to go if you have oily skin. Buildable coverage that's long-lasting but easily topped up if needed, and sort of "soaks up" grease so you shouldn't get that 'oil slick' feeling as the day goes on. You can get mineral concealers as well.

WARNING though - don't buy mineral makeup from any company that isn't a specialist in this type of makeup. I have tried many that are not specialists and they have always been useless, so stick with those that are - Lily Lolo, BareMinerals etc.

I've done very well in the past with Clinique - pricey but does the job!

Thanks for the suggestions, will definitely be having a look at these.

I use clinique skincare and have found it great so I like the idea of trying the make-up too. I did get a clinique concealer once but it seemed to come out quite dark - I have very pale skin.

Like the idea of mineral foundation too so will find out where stocks some decent brands near me to have a look at.

Cheers again for the recommendations, off to do some research...

I found that I was treating my skin too harshly so I switched to the Avene range for sensitive yet acne prone skin (Cleanance it's called). 2 and a half years later and I hate quite clear skin and rarely get a spot. To control the oilyness I use Biore UV Face Perfecting Milk SPF 50. You can buy it on ebay as it's an asian exclusive sun screen that also acts as a makeup primer. Then I just need a swish of mineral makeup (Estee Lauder Nutritious) or a BB cream and I'm out the door.

What are you cleansing your skin with OP? Many cleansers and moisturisers which claim to assist oily skin actually make it worse as they're too harsh. They sometimes strip the oils out of the skin which make the skin produce more oil to compensate.

I have oily skin and use this as a cleanser. The ingredients make it sound harsh but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it didn't make my skin more oily at all. Some of the reviews are positive on the Boots' site some aren't which goes to show that what works for one doesn't work for another. http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Tea-Tree-Witch-Hazel-Cleansing-Toning-Lotion-150ml_1213606/ There are variations on the above which include using water but I don't what's in them and have never used them as I don't like using foaming cleansers.

Try to go for gentle products and I avoid Sodium Laureth Sulfate and friends as I really react to them rash wise. HTH.

Oh BTW OP, someone told me that Amie is a good brand to go for. It's designed for teenagers with oily skin (oily and sensitive therefore) but has a really mild formulation so it doesn't strip it. I've never tried it but it comes highly recommended. http://amieskincare.com/ The range is quite cheap too.

I think if you get your skincare right then you won't have so many problems with your make-up sliding off.

Currently I use the clinique anti blemish face bar and moisturiser and it has made a dramatic improvement. Think I've been using them about 18 months or so and my skin is the best it's ever been (well, since I was about 8 lol).

Previous to that I think I'd tried pretty much every product out there, it's so difficult even when you look at reviews and recommendations as everyone responds differently.

A lot of the traditional acne skincare ranges are too harsh for me. That might be partly as I have cystic acne due to PCOS, rather than 'teenage skin', iyswim.

The clinique (and the odd swish of panoxyl for evil spots!) are doing the trick generally. It would just be lovely to be able to put some make up on and generally do myself up a bit without it pretty much falling off!

Still, compared to how bad my skin was a few years ago I really shouldn't complain. It's the odd bad spot now, compared to staying in the house crying and refusing to face the world at all.

I second the amieskincare range. I use the moisturer and cleasing wash. They are SLS free which is good as it appears that it irratates my skin and causes excema. My skin is lovely and soft, I haven't had a spot for ages! And it does appear to help with my oily skin.

I'm using ELF mineral make up at the moment which is helping with my oily skin also. I'm still having to touch up mid morning and afternoon but no where near as bad as I used to!

I use the Revlon Colourstay for oily skin and it's really good, although I only wear foundation once or twice a month (usually to go out).

I also have oily skin , but then every beauticianist tell me my skin is dehydrated... and I've no idea how to hydrate it!! I drink plenty of water, but can't really use heavy moisturizers as they make it more oily and shiny... anyone has this problem?
