I did say IMHO as I've never seen it look good anywhere I've come across it. I also think the OP may be wanting this bathroom renovation to last for some time as, given the circumstances, it doesn't sound like she's going to be moving in a year or two.

That was us a few years ago (although my husband is still here) Avocado 4 piece bathroom suite, cold tap dripping then the tiolet started leaking. Green tiles to match the suite!! Only difference was they weren't all over the room!!
We bought a 3 pice suite from focus (steel bath) and it was £150 then the plumber fitted it for £150. Then I put an old blanket in the bath and went crazy bird with the tiles!!!:T
Got paper that looks like mosiac from B&Q in beige then re did the tiles round the bath with those cheap white tiles you get and papered the rest. I tiled myself ...... it isn't that hard:j I would say I did my bathroom for less than £450 and that was including a tile cutter, fancy shelving, baskets and thats including fitting too!!!:D I'm tight!!!!:rotfl:
In my old house the kitchen tiles were brown so I got tile paint and painted them cream....it was really nice and it was pretty tough stuff...the only thing that would scratch it would be something like a chisel or something hard llike that....I had a few coats
Best of luck and let us know how you get on.
Oh yeah another thing is I didn't have to re plaster as they came off really easy????????? Hope yours does the samexxxxx

Thanks again everyone for all your help & advice:D
You're right, i'm hoping to stay here for a good few years if poss. I'm going to wait until I've saved enough to have the job done properly, think that will make it even better for me! My ex said i'd never be able to cope with the stress of a big job like a new bathroom & he said i'd never afford it!! Even if I say so myself, I've coped really well under the circumstances of the past year & to be honest, the mess a new bathroom would bring would be like a walk in the park compared to the past year!!!
Onwards & upwards! When you've hit rock bottom the only way is up!!!
Thanks again everyone, i'll let you know how I get on, though it may be later this year!!!:D

Your husband, saying comments like that, sounds jealous of how well you are coping without him. Save up and do it up, and show him up!!! Go Girl!!;)

Me and my gf have just recently moved into a flat. I have done some DIY with my dad and stuff like that but not ever tiling.

I removed the tiles from the bathroom (not too hard, just a chisle and small hammer) and I have retiled it. It was easy. I bought my stuff from tops tiles and got a free DVD on how to tile. If you have no tricky cuts to do then it is not difficult. I had to tile around three sides of the bath and down the head end of the bath the tiles don not quite match up with the other wall, but that is down to the walls. If I got a proper tiler in it would probably match but I saved myself a few hundred quid. It does not look perfect but its my own work and I am happy with it.

I have also done a splash back behind the cooker which looks great.

Grouting is a pain in the !!!!, but buy the right tools and stuff and it makes it easier.

    Hi Everyone
I'm new to this fantastic website and wondered if anyone could advise me please? We bought our house and said we would replace the bathroom suite. It is a browny/khaki (baby poo!!!:o ) coloured suite and it has floor to ceiling tiles in a matching colour with bright orange flowers! It is hideous!! It is a four piece suite, ie bath, sink, toilet and bidet!

As I said, we knew we would replace the bathroom suite sooner rather than later, unfortunately my husband chose to replace me and our two lovely children for a younger model instead of the bathroom:rolleyes: This has left us with a bathroom that has gradually deteriorated and since he left last year the hot tap on the sink has stopped working and the hot tap on the bath has to be turned on using pliers (? spelling). The cold tap on the bath drips continually. The bathroom is quite small, to give you an idea of size the bath touches three walls, with just a bit to spare! It is fully tiled in. It doesn't have a front panel just (you've guessed it) tiles! There is nothing on the floor except for a rug so the kiddies feet aren't cold when they get out of the bath.

I have looked around with my dad who has very kindly said he will buy us a cheap white bathroom suite (don't know what I'd do without him!) but I'm very worried about the cost of having it fitted. I just want a straight swap but without the bidet (the bidet has proved very handy for storing the kids bath toys in but has never been used properly!;). How much would I reasonably be expected to pay and how long should it take to be fitted?

I need to try and keep costs to a minimum (I have had to take on 3 jobs to maintain a standard of living for me and the kids because ex refuses to help) so am prepared to graft as well!!! (not easy when you have 3 jobs + 2 kids, aged 9 & 5!!) but where would I start? Do I start by taking all the wall tiles off myself? Would this keep costs down? We do have a toilet & sink downstairs and my lovely neighbour next door has said the children could have baths there! She is such a lovely lady and we are very lucky to have her as our neighbour!!!:D

    The job is:-
to take out old bathroom suite
take all the wall tiles off from floor to ceiling
    (presumably!) re plaster the walls
re tile the walls half way up
put a new bathroom suite in
    lay the flooring

We live in just outside Burnley in Lancashire. Have asked for word of mouth recommendations to no avail! I know you get what you pay for but really do need to keep costs as low as possible. I will check the local telephone book but thought you guys may be able to give me some good honest advice re cost. I need to work out how long I will have to save in order to get the bathroom fitted! I don't want to take out a loan and get further into debt! That wouldn't do would it!!?
Thank you for taking the time to read this, all thoughts & replies are greatly appreciated!:A

There is a website called netmums (i'm not too sure if it covers your area) but if it does there is a page where people have recommended trades people that they have used.Hope this is of some help.

Cal, your bathroom sounds identical to ours - poo-coloured suite, orange and beige flowery 1980's tiles, beige, orange and brown swirly carpet ... it did the job for eight years until one day the cistern just fell apart and my daughter said "Oh look, Mummy - there's water coming down the wall". We were downstairs at the time ...

Got an Armitage Shanks Sandringham suite from our local Plumb Center for £179, put it in ourselves (mostly common sense, the fittings are designed to be idiot-proof these days and it was just as well ...)

We took the tiles off ourselves (and it was sooooo satisfying) - couple of old sheets in the bath (do it before you take the old one out, broken tiles are VERY sharp), there wasn't much damage because two of the three walls that were tiled (bath set into one end of the room, like yours) were plasterboard internal walls.

We did the new tiles between us (Topps bog-standard basic white ones with an occasional strip of Homebase blue/green mosaic to break up the white), vinyl on the floor (laid by me :D) to replace the squelchy carpet, lick of paint and it's done. Well, it will be when OH "gets a round tuit" and screws the toilet to the floor, but I don't use that one much so it's not me that wobbles!

My peaceful little haven next door will be next, but I like it as it is, despite the "Pampas" cloakroom suite - been watching the renovations going on around us for eleven years, and the colours of the suites coming out of these houses are quite eye-watering :rotfl:

The one across the road was this colour - :o

Good luck to you, you sound like a very strong lady :T

bathroom suites are cheap these days if you go the right places. Some times B&Q is ok. However their items are not really that good. plumbering warehouses always have good deals on.

Check them out on the internet on the google search bar. Also screwfix has great offers.
