advice on benefits and change of circumstances?

afternoon all, im new to this site so please be gentle.

i have been dating someone who is on benefits as she has a 3 yr old child, we have been living seperatly as i have my own place that i rent privatley and she also has her own flat that is a council property, that the council pay for...now we have discussed for a while about me moving into hers all "legit" so to speak... the question is what benefits will she lose if i move in as i work full time and earn 19k a year.... we are also expecting a baby in febuary as we found out shes pregnant...am i likely to be footing the entire bill for me,partner and children all of the one salary?

thanks for reading

    Hi and welcome,

Im afraid you will to a certain degree be supporting all of you, but that is what a relationship is all about.

Depending on what benefit she claims will depend on your own circumstances but I would suspect she will loose income support, at your income level she will loose most of her Housing benefit and council tax benefit. You will have to claim tax credits as a couple, but you will get working tax credit and some child tax credit so you may find your only slightly worse off.

I suggest you use the entitled to calculator from this site and get a rough idea of how much she will loose and how much you may gain by been a couple from tax credit view point.

You can then decide what financial impact you living together will have.

    Good luck

    John

Also, when the tax credits are put into joint names, rather than just hers, be prepared for a wait. Its not just a change of circumstances. Its a whole new claim. I waited 14 weeks, so start saving etc in preparation. Congrats on the baby and welcome xxx
