Hi,
Currently have '99 306 which was thinking of getting rid as needs 500plus spent on (axle,cambelt,breaks..) I was looking at newer cars around 3.5k-4k.. small diesels as do over 20k miles a year.
Ive come across another 306 just like my own..much better condition (to look at anyway). only has 82k.. 1125. I really like my plodder and would be happy with this. any reasons to go for a newer car?for extra 2-3k?.. any more reliable?
Thanks
RichT

So you currently have a 99 plate and are thinking of swapping it for 2000 plate as it needs some work done / money spent on it. I would consider 1 year from now, you are likely to be in a similar position, are you not? The 2000 plate will be the same as your current car is now and probably needing a bit spent on it.
Cars cost money no matter what way we dress it up, regardless if its a brand spanking new one or a nearly new or a trade-in to clear, they all need something doing at somestage. I try and work out my yearly cost. Example a car I had for ten years which cost me 6k so 500 a year, but then I needed new brakes 3 times, and two new exhusts and a few tires...... I got shot when it needed in the region of 600 spent on it and I needed a more realiable car as was now required to drive for part of my commute.
So 1195 now for another car a year older than current one or 500 to get current on fixed up, you could well find yourself in the same position in a years time having to spend another 500 on either of these to get things replaced. At 12/13 years old I would be thinking it was time to get something a bit newer.
For 4 - 5 K I would think you could get a 3 or 4 year old model that should require fewer costly repairs certainly for the next 3 or 4 years. Unless you have a friend or family member that can carry out the work I think its probably about time to updrade to a newer model if you want to avoid they costly repairs.
I spent 4.5K on a 57 plate two years ago, with 30K on the clock, its been serviced twice and a new set of brakes in the two years I've owned it, I do 10K a year.0 -
Sorry my figures seem a wee bit out just read OP again and note that its 3.5 - 4k range, similar benefits though.0

£2000 will get you a 2006 car quite easily.
But all cars need to be looked after to last longer.
Watch modern diesels, If they have particle filters etc they are not such bargains if you do short journeys.
Small petrol model probably cheaper to run and more reliable, And cheaper to fix.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
