Hi
We have just had an offer accepted on our first place (I am now 42 and can now only afford my first place). We are in North London. The place we have is small an we are thinking of extending. We have had a few quotes which have blown my head off...please tell me if I am out of touch or them!!! It is a 3 bed typical semi...
Dormer hip to gable 3 quotes: 60k, 38k, 48k
3m back extension 4 quotes: 65k, 70k, 32k, 55k, 67k
All of this is inclusive of labour, materials, plumbing, electrics, plastering and installment of kitchen.
Is this what we should expect? They are so varied...who is right?
We let a bigger place go because we thought this option better--seems we were foolish...

Oh...we were also told that rewiring and replumbing a 3 bed house would be a total of 30k...15k for each project....i feel like I have been kicked in the guts now!!!0

I'm not really sure what you are talking about. What kick in the guts? What two projects?
If the numbers don't stack up then don't buy the place. That's the whole point of getting the quotes isn't it?0 -
Visit the DIY board here, they have a whole section on estimating appropriate costs.0

When the OP refers to 'two projects' I think they mean that the quotes for electrics and plumbing are £15k apiece.........
We recently paid in excess of £4k to completely rewire a three-storey 2500 sq ft 200 year old house - albeit in rural Wiltshire which doesn't command London prices - parts of which had no electric lighting fitted previously. This doesn't include external lighting (or wiring up our hot tub!) which is being done separately as part of the garden restoration works.........Mortgage-free for fourteen years!
Over £40,000 mis-sold PPI reclaimed0 -

These quotes seem very high to me! Are they from larger companies or from self-employed traders? I would say that you should be able to get both jobs done for half that amount in London. Just look for the small listings in the the yellow pages rather the big flashy adds.0
