combined postage

Hi all,

Its probably been asked before, and i'm sorry if it has but i couldn't find anything.

I was bidding on 2 next t-shirts on ebay at the weekend my maximum bid was 99p (i didn't really need them, i just liked them). To my sheer shock i won them and i know i should have asked the seller to combine postage before the auction ended but i didnt :o...

I emailed and asked if she would combine postage and they've replied saying no because of the low start price.

The postage comes to £8 (£4 each) for the both... do you think this is fair?

PLEASE don't flame me, i know i should have asked before

No, it isn't fair, but it's always wise to check first. Now you are committed :(.

Keep the email though - you might be able to report them for fee avoidance, given what they've basically admitted to. It doesn't cost £4 to post a tee-shirt, even with packaging costs.

I would consider your feedback and stars very carefully once you have received the goods. Also as Crowqueen says is these come as larg eletetr at approx £1.10 then I would seriously suggest a complaint to ebay be in order especially since seller is stupid enough to admit she is ripping you off.

However, do nothing until items arrive so you have the exact postage in front of you

Just another thought, if this is a business seller then you can cancel the sale and tell her not to bother sending.

If they saw and bid how is it not fair?

I HATE on here when people agree to pay a delivery charge then do everything they can to get out of it.

If you don't want to pay it, don't bid and do EVERYONE a favour.

I am not trying to get out of it, i am asking if it is fair. i asked people not to flame me so please don't. I came on asking a perfectly resonable question because i wanted advice.

Having previously sold on ebay when someone has won multiple items even if they go for 20p to £100 (it's my risk to set the start price low) I always combine postage, granted its not a given but i fail to understand how postage for t-shirts can be £8.

FYI I have already paid it.

Sorry, I'm currently having some issues with an ebay purchaser

It's not fair to admit you are doing it so you can start at a low price.

    That is blatant fee evasion.

I would admit, I'd never bid on a t-shirt with £4 postage, but this is like the iPhone scam, in a way - it's up to the seller to list responsibly if they don't want trouble further down the line.

I agree, this sort of seller might as well give up their account now as it won't last very long if they misuse the post and packing to avoid ebay fees. A handful of 1 or 2 stars will soon see them suspended or restricted.

Whilst buyers do need to take some responsibility for reading auctions, it is ultimately the buyer who holds all the power as it is them that have the ability to destroy a seller with low stars.

Two individual auctions here so two lots of stars- so if these do arrive as large letters with £1.10 and a 2 * is left then the seller is probably half way to restriction already- and that restriction would be the fault of the seller, not the buyer. Obviously though if they arrive as two packets at £2.20 each then mabe it might be 3 * is warranted- it is completely up to the buyer though and nothing at all to do with us random strangers on an internet forum.

All responsibility ultimately lies with the seller - they have control over their account.

They should list clearly, precisely and within the rules of the site. Any mistakes made can safely be said to be those of the buyer - and it does happen, I've made a couple of mistakes and been ready to quibble something before looking at the listing again. No biggie. I've never returned anything I thought I'd bought by mistake, even though in many cases it is legally possible to do so. By the same token, I've always offered change of mind returns; in my category there's not a huge take-up rate for them, but in some categories it's pretty much essential to do so to avoid an aggrieved buyer taking their own mistakes out on you.

But I don't try and bamboozle the buyer into buying something they don't want or is not what it appears in the listing, nor cheat eBay out of fees. It's important to trade fairly and not just try and make buyers take some responsibility or other you have a limited ability to actually impose on them (the only thing you can ever make a buyer do is pay - the rest you have to allow for some mistakes or frauds and develop strategies for dealing with them).
