pc continually reboots

I had a problem with some web pages not loading...you may have seen my thread.
It was recommended by my mate to use system restore. I set this running and it took ages instead of the 3/4 mins it usually.
When it finally rebooted I got a blue win xp screen with white dots across the top.....I've never seen this screen before and got nervous thinking it was formatting my hd.....it was taking so long, so I switched off the power.
When I booted up I got the screen where it asks if you want safe mode, last known good config, normal mode.
No matter what I choose, when it reboots after the choice, there is a flicker of a blue screen and it comes back to the safe mode page again over and over again
any ideas of what I can do to get the pc up and running again ?
I've had to rig up the laptop to get on the net,
Tom

this method allows you to do a manual system restore

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

if you can get a boot disk like Knoppix then you can move them direct and quickly without all the steps shown in the above thread

the steps you need to take are

    rename c:\windows\system32\config\system to systemold
    rename c:\windows\system32\config\software to softwareold
    rename c:\windows\system32\config\sam to samold
    rename c:\windows\system32\config\security to securityold
    rename c:\windows\system32\config\default to defaultold

    next navigate to

    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D86480E3-73EF-47BC-A0EB-A81BE6EE3ED8}\RP1\Snapshot

and locate a recent restore point , they begin RP110 or something similar

From the Snapshot folder, copy the following files to the delete c:\windows\system32\config\ folder:

    •_REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
    •_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
    •_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
    •_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
    •_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM

Rename the files in the c:\windows\system32\config\ folder as follows:

    Rename _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT to DEFAULT
    Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY to SECURITY
    Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE
    Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to SYSTEM
    Rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM to SAM

then reboot the Pc and it should start from the restore point

this looks worse than it really is !!

    takes about 5 minutes
