CFL Downlights for kitchen

Hi all,
To keep the wife happy, we've agreed we would go for downlights in the kitchen (my preference is a plain strip light!). Unfortunately I am put off by LEDs for two reasons, initial outlay and question marks over quality of light emitted. Ideally I want to stay reasonably energy efficient and am tending towards GU10 CFLs.
Can anyone recommend any particular set? I've seen some Wickes ones for £39.99 for a pack of three, which are fire rated etc but are there better options out there?
I dont want CFL bulb protruding below the rim of the downlight surround.
