Travel Insurance question

I've had an annual travel insurance policy with annualtravelinsurance for many years. I'm just about to set off for a trip to Canada with my family. Part of the trip involves me flying to LA to see my mother, before rejoining my family in Toronto

I have just discovered I might have to delay my return to Toronto, because my mother might need an operation.

Annualtravelinsurance said this wouldn't be covered, as the cancellation cover only applies to the whole trip. I was shocked by this, as I'd rather assumed the travel insurance covered all flights in a trip. Is this usual? What would happen if we had to miss our return flight from Canada because of illness or death? Would this be covered?

Are there other insurances that would cover these risks?

Many thanks for any help,

Joe

Should I have posted this in the travel section? They don't seem to have any enquiries about travel insurance there...
