Contributions based JSA

I can not work out if I will be entitled to claim JSA contributions based.

I have read you have to have paid a specific amount of NI in the 2 previous years to claiming and that year is January to January, so for a claim this year the years would be 2010 & 2011 in each of these years I worked 9 & 10 months respectively and earned approx 5k per year.

Have I worked this out correctly and am I eligible to claim

  • The job centre will assess whether you are eligible when you apply. If not, you may be able to claim income based if the household income is low enough. They will normally assess you automatically for contributions based anyway, but they need more details for income based. (and partners details if relevant).

As for Housing Benefit/Council Tax benefit best to apply with the Council Direct if you intend to apply.

  • I have been and signed on but do not know yet if I am eligible to get it.

I will only be able to claim JSA contributions as I have worked all my life and saved for retirement, just keen to know if I am eligible to receive it on my recent work record.

How long do you have to wait before you know if you are getting the benefit?

I think the assessment period would be

tax year April 09 to March 10
    and
tax year April 10 to April 11.

You have to have paid full Ni for those years to be eligible for benefit so I dont think you would be.

The other choice would be income based JSA so it woud be worked out on household income.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
