headset/mic - getting static noise problem?

Was wondering if anyone can help with a static/interferance background noise through my headset from the mic?

I just bought them from Lidls ;( in fact this is the second set, I took back the first set and exchanged them but still getting the same problem??

If I disconnect the mic plug the static goes from the headset.

If I plug in a seperate microphone which I already had with the headset still plugged in it works perfect, no static.

I am using a sony laptop.

Any ideas please?

Disabling Automatic Gain Control and reducing mic's sensitivity might help.

What's your version of Windows?

xp home edition.

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices. From there access microphone properties and switch the thing off. Sometimes you get a setting called "Microphone Boost" - switch it off as well (if you don't need it, of course).
