where do you draw the line?

let me describe two people, and i'd like views on each and where you personally would draw the line...

person A is in a job that they find boring and work is a means to an end, they are very sensible with money and overpay the mortgage. they know they could pay it off 10 years early if they keep on working in their boring job which they get no satisfaction from. they do not feel like they are fulfilling their potential, but oh well they are earning money. person A spends very little, and doesn't spend anything on things like music or dvd's. at the end of the day money rules and once the mortgage is paid person A can own their own time and not have to work. what they will do with their time when they don't have to work they don't really know, but that is their ambition.

person B keeps changing jobs and doing various short courses, they are not very good with money, and 'live in the now', spending money on things they enjoy such as going out, music and clothes. they have a few credit cards and are in a bit of debt but they cannot bear the thought of being in a job they hate. person B feels a sense of excitement in life and never knows what the next day will bring. they haven't yet decided on a career path or if they actually want a career, but are too busy enjoying life to care. they rent at a friends house and just manage to get by, they do not put money or a job first right now, and do not like thinking about the future.

the question is are you more like person A or B, does money rule your decisions, are you in a job you don't like but afraid to leave for fear of not finding another job and not being able to pay a mortgage?

or are you more like person B and don't put money first, but instead put your happiness first and live more for the moment instead of an imagine future without money worries?

Well never had a salary big enough to get a mortgage and for single people its pretty hard here in London - not really B either as I didnt keep changing jobs or doing course but had a career but I did spend what I liked and would even get black cabs instead of a bus as it's only ££ and you could be dead tomorrow.

As I have no job now I am neither a or b

    Debt-free and Proud!
I suspect most people are a bit of both, work day to day in a job they mostly like but that mainly pays the bills rather than fills their life aspirations and splurge on the odd holiday/evening out etc.... And work pays for outside interests...

  • I think I am a person C here. Hubby is an A and B... He works to earn money. Neither enjoys or not enjoys his job though it is not miserable for him. However he earns enough to want to spend whenever he wants without worrying and will happily carry on on minimum payments.

I however look at the other side I want him to overpay and overpay so we can be debt free in a year. With an income like his there is no reason for it.

I do not work. I did and originally had a better job than him that adored before I had children. Bosses changed my life changed.

There are more than A and B in life!
    On the way to ZERO!!

Because they want to be good law-abiding people and are happy to pay a fair price and contribute to the industries and artists who's work they enjoy and respect?

Your comment is like saying 'Why would anyone pay for chocolates when you can just shoplift them?'

As for the original topic of the thread, I agree with others who have already said there are a lot more types than the A and B described above. I certainly don't fit either description!
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Sort of both and actually neither!

In job A (which I do about 80% of my working life) I am quite adequately paid, although by no means "well off" by UK standards. I love it to bits although it is also very stressful - but there is nowhere to spend the money, I'd have virtually no time to spend it anyway, and if I went wild I'd struggle to spend a very small fraction of it. So the mortgage was paid off a long time ago and I have no debts!

Job B (which I am currently doing - about 20% of my working life) I also love, but is much harder in terms of the stress which is often "bad stress". I get paid a lot more. And I spend money like there is no tomorrow, possibly because it is such a novelty! Or at least I think I do, although my girlfriends tell me that I'm a useless shopper and couldn't fritter money away if I tried. Apparently always heading for the bargain basement or the sales racks ruins my credibility :)
