Wainwrights

Hi there,

Sorry i know this subject has come up before!

Im currently feeding my pup science plan dry food, which he then decided he wouldnt eat unless it had a bit of wet mixed in, so i started mixing in a bit of the puppy chicken and rice wainwrights and all is now well.

I have nearly finished the science plan bag ive got so i want to put him on the wainwrights puppy dry food as well and then mix in a bit of the wet.

What i want to know is does it matter if i mix up the flavours, ie could i give him the salmon and potato dry food and then mix in a bit of chicken and rice wet food?

Also can i keep swapping about flavours as long as its the same make or will this mess his tummy up?

Thanks! :)

I doubt he decided, you gave him some and he never looked back :p

No it doesn't matter- not sure if he'll like the mix though?

Yes you can. What breed? Unless it's one known for dietary upset I don't believe dogs do suffer from upset stomach's as much as the pet food retailers think. They're just covering their backs. My dogs have been chopped and changed in pet food and they enjoy the change- like we would. Can you imagine eating Tesco Hotpot every day and never trying Sainsburys Casserole? It's the same principle. That's just my opinion though and if he's never had anything else then he may be perfectly happy to eat the same thing over and over- unless he gets introduced to something else.

    Thanks! :)

    Thanks for the reply!

Haha okay he probably didnt decide but he wasnt eating much and then when i mixed in the wet food he loved it, tried going back to just dry and he looked at me like he hated me! It probably doesnt help that i also mix in half a boiled chicken breast as well, which again hes now got used to......hes trained me well lol!

I thought that about the flavours, but ive heard that the that the salmon and potato one is best for a sensitive tummy, which he seems to have, i couldnt give him orijen, he had really bad diareaha on that.

Hes a beagle but hes not greedy which is unusal for a beagle, he will only eat if he is hungry and isnt bothered about treats etc :)

When I fed dry food, I used to add some Naturediet (same as Wainwrights trays really). I started with a whole pack and slowly decreased the wet food and increased the dry food - eventually I could just add the tiniest slither of wet food to a nearly whole meal of dry food and that was good enough. It meant that the dog got the benefit of the richer flavour of wet food but it didn't cost me a fortune (dry food is usually much more economical than wet) and one tray of food would last quite a few days (kept in the fridge - you could even freeze it into daily portions I expect)

The biggest issue with swapping from one food to another is a change in the macronutrient content (protein/ fat/ carbs), because the enzymes in the digestive system adapt. If you didn't switch slowly over a period of weeks to Orijen this may well explain the diarrhoea. Please don't regularly add chicken breast (pure protein), a good quality complete dog food should have a balanced ratio of protein to fat to minerals. Cooked chicken should be a treat only, alternatively feed something like a whole raw thigh which has fatty skin, meat and bone or a greater ratio of wet food to biscuits.

One of my dogs had a very sensitive stomach as a puppy. Switching slowly to new foods meant the diarrhoea wasn't as bad, but it still happened. Once I found a food that he liked I stuck with it and his tummy was fine. Now as a grown up his tummy is much more resilient.
A bit like babies really, some can eat like pigs, others cannot move from one lukewarm milk to another without throwing it up on you. :-)
If the diarrhoea does not disappear after a day, contact the vet, because your dog will be loosing nutrients and water which can become dangerous if it continues for too long.
