I think, spadoosh, that it is the OP's "everyone else does it so I'm ok to be doing it" attitude that has got people's backs up.

Yes, many, many students live in their overdrafts.
Yes, many, many graduates don't pay these overdrafts back as quickly as they should.
But this doesn't make it "OK".

I do think that people have been overly harsh on the OP. But in some ways I think they need to be. Because she has seen what has gone wrong, but still thinks that what she has done is OK.
I would like to think that someone coming on here in the same boat saying "I realise, now, where I went wrong. I've had the money to pay this off. Should have done it over the past few months and then it wouldn't be a problem." would have received much kinder treatment.

What is with this "My friend is getting married in Cuba"?
Good luck to her but why should that make you bankrupt? If the selfish b.... want to live the celebrity lifestyle, let her pay for you to go. But then again the bride is probably going into debt to fund the nonsense in Cuba.
Oh the foolishness of youth!

Rude and not helpful at all!

Wow! It really doesn't long for these threads to get rather judgemental and unpleasant, does it?! I'm amazed anyone comes here asking for advice.

I agree, sick of asking for advice and been made to feel even more s**t! People seem to enjoy getting on their high horses and giving unwelcome opinions. I asked for advice NOT criticism.

As I've said, I wasn't winging about Halifax and saying what they were doing was wrong I simply said I think 2 weeks to pay it back is too soon and for most people would ruin them.

You may or may not like to know, after being paid yesterday I have removed the OD facility a few days early and after moving finances around & paying my bills for the month I have £100 to last me for the next month...enjoy!

Everyone agrees thats an issue.

Everyone agrees 2 weeks notice (though legal) is not suitable/acceptable.

The op clearly states she can live within her means (as in money in at least matches money out) yet shes got people saying shes stupid etc etc cos shes got an overdraft. Most students i know (met a few) end up in the exact same boat as the op. She also says she could afford to pay it off in a couple of months or so which suggest a healthy income (i personally couldnt afford to fork out £1800 over 2/3months without very drastic action).

Yeh she might need a bit of financial education (tbf most people do) but by no means does she deserve some of the carp spouted out on here! And that wasnt the problem that everyone was picking at, thats only been raised after its been pointed out that it might be an interest free o/d

Thank you :)

Yes I really do believe I'm like most students nowadays, in fact I feel I'm in a slightly better situation as most of my fellow students didn't get a job in industry on graduating. They are currently in rented accommodation, applying for loans & credit cards every other month to move their debt around. I own my own house and have been steadily paying my debts off...but despite having an £1,800 OD apparently I'm the reason why the country is in ruin :j

Eek.

Congrats on getting it sorted, must be a real weight lifted.

Is the £100 enough for you (as in are you going to have enough for essentials?) Anyhting you can ebay if you need to?!

Im not going to even entertain appologising on behalf of some of the rude users, like you say some people jump at the chance to get on their high horse, thing is most were on DFW 2-3 years ago asking how to pay off 000's in credit cards, they forget how much help theyve had of others.

Good luck, hope you have a nice holiday! Whilst your there give 1 second to think about this thread and have abig big smile!

Well done managing to cope with this, OP.

I still suggest you check your credit reports as the overdraft may have been cancelled because of something dodgy on there. Would be good to find out about it now rather than the mortgage doesn't come off.

As I said, you are clearly just trying to act high and mighty.

Like most that come on here! Not helpful in the slightest.
They have also thanked people for their advice - what on earth makes you think they are just going to ignore it all...
Well I've cleared my OD now & after bill's have £100 to live on for 4 weeks...obviously listened to something didn't I?!

Thanks!

Thanks! It does actually, just daunted by the next 4 weeks. Going to have do some serious cutting back but it will all be worth it when it comes to next pay day and I have less than half of the outgoings I had last month...counting down the days! :j

Yes, I'm pretty sure most of us have been in similar situations in fact I bet the majority that went into higher education and funded it them self (I didn't have rich parents to pay me through it). At the end of the day when you've got student loan companies offering you the money, banks all there on freshers weeks offering you £50 to open a bank account with an OD & credit cards etc who isn't going to take it?!

Thanks again for your advice :A

I looked into this yesterday but read somewhere that the reports are pretty useless as they aren't anything like the reports lenders look into. :(
