Because it's not a valid address?
'peter' is unlikley to be a valid domain name.
An address is more usually something like mail@peter.ISP.nl

I'd contact him through eBay messaging and get him to confirm the address.
Can you email that address OK through another device?

A Whois search shows the domain to be valid and active.

What do you mean by "won't accept this format"?

What happens? Do you get an error message? If so, what is it?

Strange email format admittedly,to us in the uk
I have asked him to reply so i know it has worked

"peter" is not, but "peter.nl" is.

I heard the rumour that there are people who use their own domain instead of their ISP's one. Might be just a rumour... ;-)
