Done all these. Think my next step might be the tip, do Dell pay to take knacked 2.5 yr old monitors off your hands & do part exchange for new one? (I'd not opted for the 5 yr warranty :o)

I'm having similar problems, mines not a Dell and i've just done a post asking about a new monitor which i've seen in Argos, smaller than yours at 21.5" but £85 sounds a good buy.

• Okay so I disconnected the faulty monitor 2 months back and have been temporarily using an old Samsung SyncMaster screen - the problem now is that for the last couple of weeks every third time (roughly) I switch on the less-than-3-yrs old (Dell Inspiron)pc I get bleeping light in sets of 4 (the on button) and the thing won't start at all! Then I try it later in the day and it seems fine, except that a couple of times it's crashed in mid use and I just restarted the thing as per normal. What can the matter be? Starting to hate Dell.

Use the Dell System Tag to check on their site. I've often found that people thought they had a one year warranty and they had actually purchased a 3 year warranty!

Can't find the specifics for your model but on Dells 4 beeps normally indicates a RAM problem. Try removing the RAM and re-inserting it.
Below are the standard Dell beep codes and their meaning

Description Suggested Remedy
1 BIOS checksum failure. Possible motherboard failure.
Contact Dell.
2 No memory modules are detected
1. If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module (see Installing Memory), and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.
2. If available, install good memory of the same type into your computer (see Installing Memory).
3. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
3 Possible motherboard failure
Contact Dell.
4 RAM Read/Write failure
1. Ensure that no special memory module/memory connector placement requirements exist (see Memory Installation Guidelines).
2. Verify that the memory modules that you are installing are compatible with your computer (see Memory Installation Guidelines).
3. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
5 Real time clock failure. Possible battery failure or motherboard failure.
1. Replace the battery (see Replacing the Battery).
2. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
6 Video BIOS Test Failure
Contact Dell.
7 CPU cache test failure
Contact Dell.
