MOT failed smoke test but passed on certificate, any advice please?

Hi, my 2.5dti 2002 Transporter failed its mot on code "7.4.b.4 - exhaust emits excesive smoke or vapour" yet the MOT Smoke Test sheet it has passed both the smoke test with a reading of 1.60 and 0.03 for the "zero drift"

My question is, is the code 7.4.b.4 the examineers personal opinion even althought it passed the actual opaique test or is this something else?

This was the only thing it failed on so iam rather gutted.

All replies appreciated :)

No idea on the legal part, but I do know that one of ours has just passed the emissions test when it emitted a massive puff of smoke on start to take it there (it had been sat outside the office for about 2 months, only MoT'd it as it's a spare)

A pass should be a scientific pass, surely?

    Method of inspection
Assess whether the smoke emitted from the exhaust, regardless of measure density, is likely to obscure the vision of other road users.

    Reason for rejection
Exhaust emits excessive smoke or vapour of any colour to an extent likely to obscure the vision of other road users.
Note: The criterion is density and not volume of smoke. The description ‘dense smoke’ includes smoke or vapour which largely obscures vision.

You really have to go back and ask for clarification, but I thought the smoke limit was 1.5 so it was a fail?

If it is listed as a Fail, it failed. If it was something that should be brought to your attention, it would be listed as an Advisory item.

Did you ask them to fix it at the time? That is often what can be done. I certainly used to do that, especially with "Regulars" if it was something I could do quickly, or within the day, after other scheduled tests.

  • unless your turbo, diesel pump, cat converter, deisel injectors have a fault, i'd be tempted to bung a diesel treatment inthe tank (wyns stuff is good) and sit in it and rev it for a while to curculate. then try the test again.

Thanks for all the replies, i did ask the examiner but he seemed not to intrested and just told me to visit a deisel specialist and then come back, i did have it with them for a service but was told no point in doing the service until i visit a deisel specialist. I did ask them if they could do anything and he said it would involve striping the engine to check the seals etc and they dont have room for that.

Colino a tdi engine is allowed 3.0 as far as iam aware.

It did pass the actual smoke tests by the machine but failed what i beleive is a half engine speed test, the engie is left to idle for a set amount of time and then reved to half the engine speed and if too much smoke is given off by a personal opinion of the examiner it fails.

Thanks for all the replies so far, i have since cleaned the egr valve and iam waiting on a special cleaner for the engine that should be here tomorrow so will take it from there.
