How long can I be without insurance and retain my no claims?

I have been driving since I was 17 and have 16 years no claims
My poor old car has died and now sat on my drive until I get round to getting it scrapped this week, I sent off the tax disc Friday and it is still insured. Thing is I haven't got much cash at the moment so need to save up, but I am worried if I am without a car for too long I will forfeit my no claims. For the last 2 weeks I have borrowed my Mum's car for shopping, Doctors etc, been getting the bus to work. I am thinking of it might be worth hanging onto my old car and just keep it insured until I save up?
So does anybody know, if I scrap the car next week and cancel the insurance how long can I be without one and not lose my no claims?
Thanks

If you no longer own the car (because you've scrapped or sold it) then
1) any cover you had to driver other cars is no longer valid - so you must be insured on the other policies if you borrow someone else's car
2) you MUST inform your insurer to remove the cover from the vehicle. If someone else drives it uninsured and has an accident, your insurer may still have to pay out, and they'll then come after you for the money because you haven't complied with the policy. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
