child tax credit & Gift Aid / money to charity

Question for one of my friends who I'm helping fill in the annual declaration for tax credits.
In 2011-2012 he paid nothing to charity.
2010-2011 he paid £550 to charity
2009-2010 £175 was paid .
(He has receipts for these amounts but might have paid more to other charities too).

In the guide page 9 it says ask for form TC825, i realise 2 days are left before you get a fine etc etc.
Question is the declaration is for 2011-2012 so these wont count for this year.

what do they do regarding the previous years, do you get a credit for any charitable giving?

I havent done this myself as I use Charity Trust
Save you paying tax on charity giving

  • If you do it over the telephone, you will be asked your final figures for 2011/2012. You just need to take of the value of these from the PAYE or Self Employment earnings and quote these amounts, they may ask you for the amount seperately too.

You don't have to have the form, this just helps.

BUT if you are in my situation HMRC TC will check the figures, find out there is a difference, won't bother to check why and send out one of their prove it forms.

So you should do it but expect them to ask for proof.

IQ is an expert on here and will tell you more shortly, I'm sure ;)

i've few years of claiming but never heard of these.
what do they cross reference for what you have entered?
  • If you give them PAYE figures they check them against whats on the Tax systems, well in my case they did :-(, if it's self employment they check whats on your tax return.

If things don't add up and they decide to... they change your figures to what they think they should be, send you a letter asking you to complete a form and provide proof of what you are saying.

Really quite annoying! But guess stops major fraud, or people taking the cash gaining interest and then simply giving it back.
