Taking medication to the USA

i am currently taking medication for two prolapsed disc's in my back in the form of :

200 microgram buprenorphine temgesic sublingual tablets
300mg Pregabalin Tablets
50mg Amitriptyline Tablets
30mg Dihydrocodine Tablets

1) Are there any rules that stops me from taking these tablets to the USA.
2) Im aware i should make sure they are in the original boxes with the prescription clearly labelled on the boxes.
3) Should i carry them with me on the plane or put them in my hold baggage.
4) Do I need to get a letter from my doctor saying that i am taking such medication.

I have made my insurance aware of my condition and tablets i take and they are happy to cover me.

Many thanks in advance for your help

There is a whole great long list of conditions for taking medication into the States.

However, all the times I've been, I've simply cut the pack fronts off the boxes and chucked them in a bag with the pills - On any occasion they have been looked at, a quick glance has been quite enough. The officers then got on with giving my camera and lenses the fine-tooth treatment.

This is true and the first time I flew to the States carrying an Epi-pen, I dutifully got a letter from my GP and made check in and security aware that I had it and needed to carry it in my hand luggage. No problems.

However, they were so blase about it that ever since (more than a dozen trips) I have simply put it in one of the see through bags for liquids alongside other bits and bobs and no one on either side of the Atlantic has ever commented on it. In fact I still carry the original GP letter just in case, but it is now 5 years old, so not sure what they would make of it now if I were to be asked for it! I wouldn't worry about tablets.

Official info here, but don't put them in your hold luggage if you will really need them - always carry in your hand luggage.

Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • I've never had any issues taking meds into the states or any other country for that matter. Just make sure all are still in their blister packets to be sure.
