Best paint for lining paper?

Hello all

A few years ago I painted our hall, stairs & landing with a regular emulsion paint (Dulux - think it was matt). Problem was as all of the walls are lined, the paper seemed to suck the paint in and left a patchy finish, despite several coats. I've never been happy with it.:(

It's now looking a bit grubby and needs a lick of paint. Question is, is there a paint anyone can recommend? I don't want the same problem as before as it's such a large area and costs £££.

Any tips/advice appreciated.

Patchy finish implies paint applied too thickly, wrong roller type and wrong technique used rather than it being the fault of the lining paper.

Bear in mind that the patchyness will still be there when you repaint so you'll need to rub it down with a very fine grade abrasive paper to get an even surface over which to repaint.

Get those three things right and you shouldn't have a problem with any decent paint.

My husband is a retired decorator, I foolishly bought some B&Q emulsion and it took 3 coats to do our lounge.

He bought some Johnsons One Coat for our bedroom and it did exactly what it said on the tin.

Dont use a sponge roller, use a good mohair one.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

    Thanks for the posts guys.

I'm normally pretty good at painting to be honest but it seems not on this occasion :D

It's plain lining paper, won't it cause a bobbled effect if I lightly sand?

I used some of that 'Endurance' paint in the bathoom and it is great. Slight sheen to it and easy to maintain.

Would this type of paint work the same on a lined wall?

Yes it will if you use 60 grade. By fine I mean 300 grade.

Very good stuff for a retail spec paint.

    See no reason why not.
